Fundamentals of Project Management

This course is a comprehensive introduction to the many elements of modern project management concepts. Specially designed for people who want to build or increase their skills in project management and who work or are looking to work international development organizations, donor and public institutions, NGOs, non-profit and community-based organizations, Government and donor agencies, and anyone interested in a career in development project management. The course is based on the fourth edition of the textbook Fundamentals of Project Management. 

The course is three weeks long. Each week presents the activities and exercises required to meet the learning objectives. Participants require an average of one hour per day to complete the assigned activities. The course makes use of a case study to help comprehend and apply the learning material. This e-course promotes and facilitates the collaborative learning approach in online courses where students will participate in discussions as part of the assignments and receive feedback from the course instructor. 

Effective Project Management

Modern project management has been proven to be the most effective method of delivering results within cost, schedule, and resource constraints. In this his course you will learn the management processes required to deliver consistent results in a development project. While development projects are similar in some ways to other types of projects, they pose unique challenges for the managers and organizations that undertake them. 

This course will give you a complete understanding of the most common processes, tools, techniques, and best practices that are necessary to manage development projects. This online course is 3 weeks long and is based on the third edition of the textbook Effective Project Management.  You will need an average of one hour per day to complete the required activities such as lectures, forum participation, and case study exercises. Successful completion of all the course requirements will lead to the award of a Certificate of Completion. 

Project Design, Monitoring, and Evaluation

This course will enable you to understand and put in practice a sound results-based monitoring and evaluation methodology in your project. This course will give students an understanding of the most common processes, tools, techniques, and theories that are necessary to monitor and evaluate a project. 

This course examines the defining characteristics of monitoring and evaluation techniques and introduces the student to a variety of project management techniques that can be applied in a development project context.

Adaptive Project Management

In this comprehensive course, you will learn how to initiate, plan, implement, adapt and close a project that meets the objectives and satisfies stakeholders. The online course will introduce the elements of the project lifecycle.  You will learn the techniques for the efficient management of a project using a phased approach. You will learn and practice the latest tools and techniques necessary for project management success.

In this course, an experienced Project Management Professional will teach you the same powerful tools and techniques that experienced project management professionals rely on every day. In addition, you will apply the fundamental models of reflective practice and learn to utilize the concepts of Monitoring, Adapting, and Continuous Improvement.

Students "learn by doing" through the class exercises while lecture points are reinforced with class discussions and videos.

Leadership in Project Management

Leadership is needed at every level - you don't have to a manager to be a leader. People at any level of an organization can be an effective leader with the right skills and techniques. Successful leaders behave differently; they exhibit specific behavioral styles. This course will show you the behavioral styles of successful leaders, and help you find your own leadership style to move ahead in your career.

At the end of this course, participants will understand leadership theories and learn the key leadership skills, evaluate different motivational approaches, identify the techniques for resolving conflict and managing team issues, understand the elements of stakeholder analysis, know the steps to develop a communication plan, and the techniques for effective negotiations.

Results-Based Project Management

Results Based Management (RBM) is is a management strategy by which all actors, contributing directly or indirectly to achieving a set of results, ensure that their processes, products, and services contribute to the achievement of desired results (outputs, outcomes and higher-level goals or impact)” UNDP

Results Based Management is a shift from a focus on the inputs and activities to a focus on the outputs, outcomes, and impact. Results are the changes that can be described and measured and it’s the consequence of a cause-effect relationship. They imply that changes in behaviors, by individuals, groups of people, organizations, government bodies or society, has taken place. 

This course takes the concepts of RBM and applies it directly to the project management environment, using all the processes and methods that will help development projects achieve the desired results. It is designed for people that have a responsibility to manage or contribute to the results of a project; especially project managers, team members, and project directors.
